Jonathan Breslau, M.D., F.A.C.R.

Dr. Breslau is the President and Board Chairman at Radiological Associates of Sacramento (RAS), where he has worked as a neuroradiologist since 1995. Since joining RAS, Dr. Breslau had held a number of leadership roles, including President of the California Radiological Society, Chief of Staff at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, and, currently, in an elected position on the Council Steering Committee of the ACR. Dr. Breslau published the first paper on radiologist participation in ACOs, and has recently published on subspecialization in radiology and teleradiology standards.

Over the past 18 months, Dr. Breslau has focused primarily on the acquisition of RAS by Sutter Health, including the purchase of the entire technical operation, and employment for all 61 RAS shareholders and over 95% of the nearly 800 RAS employees.

In Sacramento, Dr. Breslau and his wife, Lisa, are raising two daughters, a fifth grader and a sixth grader, so they haven't fully experienced adolescence yet -- on the receiving end.

Location:

Ahrens’ Research

Dr Ahrens’ laboratory conducts non-invasive imaging of the dynamic trafficking patterns of phenotypically-defined populations of immune cells can play a key role in elucidating the pathogenesis of major diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disorders. The lab has developed a new field of in vivo cell tracking called ‘in vivo cytometry.’ In this approach, cell populations of interest, such as immune, tumor or stem cells, are tracked and quantified in vivo. We formulate novel perfluorocarbon (PFC) emulsions to label cells ex vivo. Labeled cells are introduced into the subject and cell migration is monitored using 19F MRI. The 19F images are extremely selective for the labeled cells, with no background signal from the host’s tissues. Moreover, the absolute number of labeled cells in regions of interest can be estimated directly from the in vivo 19F images. Alternatively, cell biodistribution can be rapidly and quantitatively assayed using conventional 19F NMR in intact tissue samples. These unique tools are being used to elucidate the etiology and dynamics of inflammatory events in cancer and autoimmune diseases, such as type-1 diabetes, experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (MS-model), and irritable bowel disease. In vivo cytometry is also being used to evaluate the modes of action of live-cell immunotherapeutic interventions in these disease models. Additionally, the PFC emulsion reagents have bio-sensing properties that report on the absolute level of intracellular oxygen and can potentially monitor cell activation, differentiation or apoptosis in vivo.

Topic:

"Pushing the limits of MRI"

Abstract:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) continues to be an incredibly rich area for innovative research.  Similar to scientists at UCSD, who have been pioneers in some of the latest developments in novel MRI imaging techniques, we, at the University of Utah have been working on a variety of problems that are at the limit of MRI technical capabilities.  Speed and resolution are limiting factors in a variety of applications and I will discuss our work in three seemingly unrelated fields:  MRI guided focused ultrasound surgery, MRI/MRA of the cervical carotid, and MRI of the inner ear.  In conjunction with these projects we have implemented novel gradient technology and some novel acquisition and reconstruction techniques.  In the past 2 years we have implemented a novel gradient system that allows simultaneous incorporation of an insert gradient with the MRI scanner body gradients, yielding greatly increased gradient performance.  We have applied constrained reconstruction techniques to create faster methods of temperature measurement, and have developed a novel cine Turbo (Fast) Spin Echo pulse sequence.

Challenges in Clinically Accurate Interpretation"

Location:

UCSD Medical Center, Main Auditorium

7:30 - 8:30 am

Program Description:

This lecture will assume at least a basic understanding of perfusion

imaging for the audience.  It will cover of the current controversies

and challenges in accurate interpretation of perfusion imaging for acute

ischemic.  Inaccurate interpretation may improperly exclude patients

from revascularization or, alternatively, triage patients to treatment

when the risk/benefit ratio is unfavorable.  The basis for these

pitfalls with example cases will be discussed.  Attendees will also

learn strategies for more accurate interpretation while looking forward

to future software improvements.

Lecture title: "Global Warming: the Population Connection"

ABOUT THE LECTURE:

The primary cause of global warming is the needs and wants of the human population, now over 6.7 billion. Most proposals for slowing climate change emphasize costly technical alternatives to the burning of fossil fuels, alternatives often still in developmental stages.  These remedies all have significant limitations: inefficacy, immature technology, counter-productivity, unacceptable cost, and/or adverse environmental consequences and risk. Furthermore, costly technical strategies are inapplicable in the less developed countries, in which live 80% of world

population, and which now generate more than 50% of greenhouse gas emissions.

While technical strategies may play an ancillary role, adequate control of global warming will require direct address of the primary cause - global overpopulation. The advent of global warming constitutes a powerful new and synergistic argument in support of population stabilization and reduction.  Methods, feasibility, and implementation strategies for voluntary population restraint will be presented.
